A Visit to Togo...

Things are good here in Ghana. I finally have my class schedule settled. Registering for classes is quite the ordeal here in Ghana. Nothing is set in stone. They were still changing class times and professors around allthe way through the third week.

Last weekend I traveled to Togo and visited an organization called LaConscience. They work on rescuing children from child-trafficking. The center that I visited in Ahepe in the central part of the country housesabout 100 to 120 young adults (ages 14-18) and enroll them in 2 or 3 year programs to teach the girls hairdressing, weaving, or sewing and to teachthe boys welding or carpentry. They've also placed nearly 400 youngerkids in home stays throughout the village and are paying the families asmall stipend for the extra burden of another child. La Conscience pays for all of the children's school fees and supplies. I was very impressedby what I saw but also very humbled by how large of a problem traffickingis in West Africa. I have some pictures of the trip posted on my blog andmy flickr page - www.flickr.com/photos/renegadegast/ andhttp://www.destinationspot.blogspot.com/.

My sponsoring Rotarian planned to take me on a trip into the central partof Ghana for a project her organization (The Hunger Project) works on. The trip didn't work out but I may have another opportunity soon. She is also helping me to set up a speaking engagement at the Accra Airport clubsoon. I'll keep you posted on how that's coming along.Well I'm going to sign off now. I'm headed out for dinner soon. We aregoing to the Chicken Inn at the local Bonjour gas station... sounds goodhuh? (Actually it's become one of my favorites... Tuesdays aretwo-for-one pizza night at the Pizza Inn).
